Maryland Ironman Winner, Dallastown HS Teacher Killed In Bicycle Crash: Officials

A former Ironman Maryland All-Around winner and popular Pennsylvania high school teacher was killed in a bicycle crash in York County, friends and officials announced on Monday, July 29.

Joseph "Joe" Klinedinst, 48 of York, died at the scene of a crash at the intersection of Mt Pisgah and Ducktown roads in Hellam Township at 11:55 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, according to the coroner's release and later identified by family friends and a county commissioner. 

Chief Deputy Coroner Tania Zech responded to the scene to investigate and certify the death at 11:05 a.m., as detailed in the coroner's release. 

Joe was helmeted and solo-riding westbound on Mt Pisgah Road when his bike "impacted the side of an SUV that was pulling out to go east on Mt Pisgah Rd. The incident occurred about 10:15 a.m.," as stated in the coroner's release. 

Hellam Township and Pennsylvania State police are investigating.

His next of kin have been notified and an autopsy is scheduled to determine his official cause and manner of death. 

Joe, a Jacobus, PA native, was a Dallastown Area Senior High School and Millersville University graduate who returned to his high school to work as a teacher and academic advisor to the DAHS Video Production Club, according to his social media. He also started JK Endurance Coaching in 2021 and made YouTube videos, according to coaching sites.

Joe participated in 22 Ironman competitions, becoming the 2022 Maryland All-Around Ironman winner, records show. 

His community has been sharing about its loss on social media.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, according to social media.
